Until last month I had never heard of this amazing type of cookware. Cooking is something we all do – for some of us it’s a dreaded chore and for others a delight. Whichever group you belong to you will find these great Greenpan cookware sets of huge benefit.
I have always been a stainless steel cookware person. Mom eventually introduced me to non stick frying pans when they became the rage, but I began to worry when I noticed the non stick surfaces started to peel off and chip and then after a while, the surface was completely gone. A percentage of which I assume had gone “down the hatch”! Ahhh!
I was also concerned about the harmful effects of PTFE, (polytetrafluorethylene) which makes up the traditional non stick surfaces. It is not stable when heated above 260 deg C and breaks down, emitting harmful toxic fumes, which can damage the respiratory tract of humans.
Even the manufacturing process to produce PTFE is harmful to the environment as PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) is used. It is known to be a ‘likely human carcinogen’ and has been found in 95% of the population.
I came across an alternative in Greenpan cookware with a patented Thermalon non stick mineral surface which does not contain PTFE or use PFOA in it’s manufacture. It is ceramic based and is able to sustain very high temperatures – up to 450 deg C. This allows convenient use on stovetop and even in the oven. It is also perfectly safe in the dishwasher.
I do not like to have to add butter, oils and fats when cooking and this Greenpan surface certainly doesn’t need that, so that is a plus. It is highly scratch and abrasion resistant too. The heat conduction is very evenly distributed so the heat reaches up the walls of the pan. This means that short, high heat searing is possible, sautéing and even to flambé if you are game! The ‘nano’ technology gives it increased durability helping to prevent chipping and peeling of the non stick surface.
Cleaning of the Greenpan is quick and easy as the foods cooked lift off without leaving any residue. I only use environmentally friendly dish washing detergents for both hand wash and automatic washing machines, so I know I am totally safe from toxic contaminants. What is the point of cooking on surfaces that are safe, then cleaning them with toxic and abrasive detergents which leave harmful residue that end up being consumed with the food cooked in them?
Any beneficial kitchen utensil that has a healthy alternative to the possibility of consuming toxic substances is a hit with me.
